Number 11

…. has arrived in the form of a 2.0 GT package, the only 2.0 version available in Europe, all others are 1.5 liter engines. Contrary to the previous version this sits a bit more comfortable and less sporty, the previous one was a Sport package with Recaro seats in it, These bucket seats made getting in and out a bit harder compared to this one with standard seats. Makes it a bit easier on myself, I do get older as well.

This is the first car I owned with LED lights, noticed that with the type of weather on this picture the lights tend to dim during the ride as the snow doesn’t melt off properly like it did with halogen or normal lights. The picture was taken directly after a 40km ride with light snow, so not even too bad that time.

I see this working out

IMG_9067Came across a Mazda showroom in the Umeda Sky Building (Osaka) with a new MX-5 in there. Couldn’t resist trying it out. Much more resembles my old NA then my NC getting into it as it feels like the seat is lower. Due to being in Japan the drivers side is on the right, which for us just feels odd. Also Sunny liked it which was for me a good sign as such the title of this post. 🙂

Number 10 has arrived

MX-5
3rd Generation MX-5 (2009 Facelift Model)

Yes, back to what I used to drive for about 13 years before the Honda. The latter started to act up in the breaking department and after a few repeats that made the perfect excuse to exchange it for something that puts a smile on your face every time you drive it. Picked it up a few weeks ago, had to get used to get in and out of the car as you sit very low in it, noticed the same thing with about everybody who sat in the car when getting out. So from now on at any given sunny day I will not be looking up to a roof that cannot open any longer which I’ve been doing for the last four years……… Will be interesting to see how this one behaves in winter weather (snow), the previous MX-5 held up better than the Honda Accord did, I tend to think this one will do as well. Lets see how long this one will be with me, it is one year older compared to the previous one, so 12 years? I’ll be 54 by then, somehow I doubt it.

OBDII and Android, how fast is the 1/4 mile?

Torque on Android

This is just one of the cool features of Torque, an app for Android phones and tablets. I think it will work better on a tablet simply because of the amount of additional real estate it has to offer. This increases readability of all the dials enormously. The current family car isn’t exactly fast and if I still had my previous car there would not have been an OBD connector in it as it was way to old to have one. I bought one of those cheap Chinese ELM327 bluetooth OBDII dongles from DealExtreme and it does the job. It is able to read all kinds of data from the cars ECU, also when driving as such the above remark. Most cars which are younger then 10 years should have a OBD connecter within 1 meter of the drivers seat, usually somewhere under the dashboard, at least that’s were mine is. Will explore more features of this app as it has logging capabilities and even the possibility to reset error codes although this is more for my brother after he has serviced the problem which caused it in the first place……

Number Nine

Honda AccordBefore my Mazda will act up a little bit to much I thought it would be wise to trade it in for something else. After about 310.000km and close to 16 years of service it’s time for something else. So looked around for a Mazda 6 and on that search came accross something else. Not a Mazda but a 2005 Honda Accord Tourer. This car is bigger then the Mazda, but just as reliable; at least that is what I hope, and cheaper to get. After driving it I was sold, a very nice driver indeed. The size of the car will need some getting used too as moving from a dinky toy to the largest car Honda can deliver is quite a difference. With the rear seats down I can lie in the back without bending my knees, so that is about 1.8m of space….. As I buy my cars second hand you cannot have the choice of colour as you would with a new one and black is not the first colour that comes to mind but it will do. Hopefully it will last me just as long as the Mazda did which I drove for 13 years.

The previous eight cars are:

Some of these I only drove for a couple of weeks, as they where sold. After number 5 the pricetag for the cars I choose went up and selling them didn’t occur anymore and they where traded in on a frequent basis until the MX-5. It took only 6 years to go through the first seven cars on the list, the rest was taken by the MX-5. And this will be the car I will miss the most of all of them, the only other car with really fond memories is the 323 GTXi, which was a really nice driver as well. If in the future I will have a house including a garage I think I will buy a convertible again, but instead of one that can be used as a daily driver rather something with more classical lines, most likely a replica. Cobra’s come to mind as there are plenty to go around even in the Netherlands, but an Abigail or Marlene would be awesome, those are the most beautiful cars I’ve seen so far. Abigail would be an Auburn 852 Boattail Speedster and Marlene a Mercedes 500K Roadster, both originally build in the 1930’s. Another cheaper alternative would be a JBA Falcon which also has similar lines, but there are no left hand driven cars in existence as far as I know. The JBA is build in the UK, where the other two are mostly build in the United States.

MX5 in Parking Garage
Bye Bye

Broken window

Couple of weeks ago my girlfriend decided it would be nice to start the car for me but forgot one thing….. I never park on with the handbrake applied. I always leave it in gear especially now the car doesn’t drive that much anymore. My current employer supplied me with another car for all work related stuff, I only use the Mazda for private rides and occasionally also for work as it needs to drive so every now and then to stay in shape. So as the car was parked backward the gear was still applied in reverse and as soon as she started the car jumped backward and due to it’s height parked itself on the curb and the rear tires just outside the pond behind the parking lot.

She got lucky the curb was high enough otherwise my car would be swimming together with the ducks and Sunny behind the wheel. Doubt it will sink much as the water is about 20 – 30 cm deep, however to get it out would be a different matter as it will suck itself tight in the mud.

However it did came with one cost which was the passenger side window. When this happened she left the door open and it hit a tree when the car came to a rather abrupt standstill and as the window runs free on an open two seater that didn’t survive the impact. The door itself was not affected thankfully.

After getting it off the curb with a tow, I’ve driven it towards my parents so it was parked somewhere dry until the replacement window would arrive. The bottom was okay maybe a few bits of coating but that is it. The exhaust pipe is running inside a tunnel together with the drive shaft and the beam that bolds the differential to the gearbox, in that way it is girlfriend proof.

When reparing the window we’ve found out the car is getting old as the wires moving the window up and down broke after moving the window up and down a couple of times and they needed to be replaced as well.

Guess this was a nice lesson that in reality not everybody applies a handbrake compared to what you learn with your driving lessons. I simply down want to let the brake pads rust onto the discs when it’s standing there for a while. She now knows and I guess this was a valuable lesson for when she gets her driving license….. In the meantime I do keep my car keys with me at all times……

Carlsbad again

tonkaBack in California again. Weather is again great, think it will be kind of hot when summer hits but at this moment it is great. No rain this time, and a bigger car. Went for a compact car but got a sort of tonka truck for the same price, doubt I can say the same on fuel consumption. The tonka truck being a 2008 Dodge Dakota, which for us Europeans is a big car. So far there have been no nice documentaries or something like the “Life after people” I saw the last time. Television has been a pretty boring affair. Although it was nice to see how they build Disneyworld in Orlando, but that about it thus far. Currently sitting in the office waiting for my colleague to return, he is at the other branch office nearby getting some necessary data. After that I can continue working so it is nice to fill my blog with more junk. Somehow I think this will also be the last time to visit this office as the migration is just about complete after I leave this week. But you might never know, that’s for sure.

Window trouble

Well during my stay I had my car checked and certified for yet another year on the road. Not much needed attention so costs where low as well. But the car is getting older, took it home and went to work. At my workplace is a parking garage so I lowered the window and stuck my pass in and drove on. After parking the car I wanted to close the window and to my surprise that did not do a thing. Seems that after 15 years of service the switch finally caved in and I got stuck with a window that wouldn’t go up anymore….. Decided I would go home a bit earlier to fix the issue and so I did. Also because the weather forcast was not so good during the end of the day and I would like the car to be at my place if weather would decide to go bad. Back home found out the switch could not be saved anymore so a simple wire to lead 12v towards the engine for the window at least got the window up and that would keep the car dry for the time being. Ordered a new switch unit that day and a couple of days later my window was working fine again. I just hope that there will not be too many of those little things that will fail in the future as they are kind of annoying. But with a 15 year old car you can always expect the unexpected I guess. But for the time being I can drive it again for another year, so I’ll see what happens when the car turns 16.

295000… Yeah, right!

MX5 in Parking GarageNot by a long shot, come 5000 short at least. Not surprising when I was send to China for five weeks and one week in Korea. Later on an additional three weeks of leave to get over the previously mentioned six….. Just kidding, but if the car is standing still for 9 weeks I’m not going to make the estimated amount which I calculated in August. Not that it really matters anyway. It seems the riddle on whether to keep the MX-5 is solved, my girlfriend wants to drive it after she has got her Dutch driving license. She has a Chinese driving license but it’s not valid here. She likes small cars and this car is small enough for her taste. So the only thing preventing this to happen is if the car decides it’s time has come and will present me with a repair bill I don’t want to pay anymore. Then my girlfriend will need to settle with a different type of car. Once she has her driving license I will look for another one, still have to make my mind up about that one……
